Log management compared: Datadog, Grafana, Better Stack, Axiom and more
What 5 GB and 500 GB of logs a month cost on Datadog, Grafana Cloud, New Relic, Elastic, Better Stack, Axiom, Sentry and 14 more. Plus which PaaS hosts drain logs to which service, and how query languages, retention, alerting and self-hosting compare.
Your app runs on a PaaS, and its logs vanish after an hour on Vercel Hobby, a week on Render Hobby or 1,500 lines on Heroku. You need them somewhere you can search, alert on and keep. The choice looks like a price list, but the prices are in different units (per GB ingested, per million events indexed, per GB-month stored, per compute-hour), and some services you can’t reach from your host without running a shipper yourself.
This guide prices the same two workloads, a small app at 5 GB of logs a month and a busy one at 500 GB, on every service that publishes a rate, and lists which log services each host in our hosting platforms comparison can send to natively. Then it compares ingest, query languages, retention, alerting, trace correlation and self-hosting.
Every number comes from the vendors’ own pricing pages, docs, price APIs and changelogs, read on 25 October 2026. We didn’t run or benchmark any of these services; speed claims are the vendors’ own, and every monthly total is our arithmetic from list prices.
The short answer
- Side project: New Relic’s free tier (100 GB a month, 30 days’ retention, one full user), Grafana Cloud Free (50 GB a month, 14 days) or Axiom Personal (500 GB a month, 30 days, one user). For 5 GB a month all three cost $0. PostHog (10 GB free) and Sentry (5 GB free) make sense if you already use them.
- Startup on a PaaS: Better Stack. It has the widest set of native host integrations among the developer tools (Vercel, Render, DigitalOcean, Northflank, Heroku and Fly.io), and 500 GB a month costs about $75 in its default EU region ($115 in the US) if you keep logs 30 days. Axiom is the cheaper alternative at volume ($25 a month covers 1 TB of data loading) if your host can reach it.
- Already on Grafana or Datadog: stay. Grafana Cloud Logs is about $224 a month for 500 GB on Pro. Datadog is among the most expensive ways to keep everything searchable ($1,325 a month on demand for 500 GB indexed for 15 days), so on Datadog, index only what you alert on and send the rest to Flex Logs or the archive.
- Must self-host: SigNoz or ClickStack (both on ClickHouse, with traces and metrics), OpenObserve, Grafana Loki or VictoriaLogs; licences and what the free editions leave out are in the self-hosting table.
- Cost-sensitive at volume: Axiom (about $25 plus query use for 500 GB), Better Stack ($75 in the EU, $115 in the US), PostHog ($102.50, 14 days) and SigNoz ($150, 15 days). Per-event pricing punishes small, chatty log lines; per-GB pricing punishes large ones.
- Hosts with no drain at all: Railway, Sevalla and Lightsail containers. Fly.io and Koyeb make you run a Vector-based shipper yourself. On these, send logs from the app with OpenTelemetry or a vendor SDK.
How do log management services compare?
Plan fees are the fixed monthly price of the cheapest paid plan, with usage priced separately; “0” means there is no plan fee, only usage (plus users, on New Relic).
| Service | What you pay for | Plan fee per month ($) | Free allowance | Default log retention | Query language |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Datadog | $0.10/GB ingested, plus $1.06–3.75 per million events indexed (by retention and billing term) | 0 | None (14-day trial) | 15 days on demand | Datadog log search syntax |
| Grafana Cloud Logs | $0.05/GB processed, $0.40/GB written, $0.10/GB per extra 30 days | 19 | 50 GB of logs a month, 14 days, 3 users | 30 days (Pro) | LogQL |
| New Relic | $0.40/GB of all telemetry beyond 100 GB, plus users | 0 | 100 GB of data a month, 1 full user | 30 days | NRQL or Lucene |
| Elastic Cloud Serverless | Logs Essentials: $0.35/GB ingested and $0.036/GB-month retained at low volume | 0 | None (14-day trial) | 30 days | ES|QL, KQL, Lucene |
| Splunk Cloud Platform | Ingest, workload or activity-based subscription | — | None in the cloud; self-hosted Splunk Enterprise Free takes 500 MB of logs a day | Storage for 90 days included (ingest and activity plans) | SPL |
| Sumo Logic | Essentials: prepaid credits at $0.15 each, about 25 credits per GB ingested; Flex (annual, sales-led; Sumo’s docs call it the default for new customers): $0 ingest, pay per TB scanned | — | None: the free account can’t ingest | 30 days | Sumo Logic query language |
| Better Stack | $0.10/GB ingested, $0.05/GB-month retained (EU; US $0.15 and $0.08) | 0 | 3 GB of logs a month, 3 days | Set per source (30 days in bundles) | SQL, PromQL, drag-and-drop |
| Axiom | Data loading ($0.12/GB after 1 TB), query compute and compressed storage | 25 | Personal: 500 GB of data loading a month, 30 days, 1 user | 30 days (Personal), configurable | APL |
| PostHog Logs | $0.25/GB after 10 GB, $0.15/GB above 300 GB | 0 | 10 GB of logs a month | 14 days | SQL, filters, LogQL-compatible API |
| Sentry Logs | $0.50/GB after 5 GB | 26 | 5 GB of logs a month, 1 user | 7, 14 or 30 days by plan | Sentry search syntax |
| SigNoz Cloud | $0.30/GB at 15 days, $0.40 at 30 days | 49 | None (30-day trial) | 15 days | Query builder, ClickHouse SQL |
| Managed ClickStack | ClickHouse Cloud compute-hours plus $25.30/TB-month compressed storage | 0 | $300 trial credit | You set it | Lucene-style search, SQL |
| Cloudflare Workers Logs | From 1 Dec 2026: $0.25/GB after 50 GB, $0.10/GB-month after 10 GB-month | 5 | 0.5 GB of logs a day on Free | 7 days (Free is 3 days until 1 Dec) | Filters, SQL |
| Dash0 | $0.06 per million log records ingested plus $0.54 per million stored | 0 | None (14-day trial) | 30 days | Filters, PromQL |
| LaunchDarkly Observability (formerly Highlight) | $1.50 per million log lines after 10 million | 0 | 10 million log lines a month | 1 month | Key-value search |
| Papertrail (SolarWinds Observability) | Per GB a month, sold in 1 GB steps, from $5/GB | — | None | 1 to 60 days, you choose | Papertrail search syntax |
| OpenObserve Cloud | $0.70/GB ingested ($0.50 with a 12-month commitment), $0.01/GB queried | 0 | None (14-day trial) | 30 days | SQL, full-text search |
Rates are list prices on 25 October 2026 in the US or the vendor’s default region (EU for Better Stack), for the cheapest self-serve plan that holds the volume; Papertrail’s $5/GB is a multi-year contract rate, and ClickStack is priced at ClickHouse’s recommended sizing. A dash in the plan-fee column means no fixed plan price is published: Splunk sells by quote, Papertrail sells per-GB plans and Sumo Logic sells prepaid credits. Datadog, Dash0 and LaunchDarkly bill per event or record; most of the rest bill per GB sent (Elastic and Cloudflare count the enriched size), and ClickStack bills compute and storage. Sentry’s $26 is its Team plan billed annually, and SigNoz’s $49 is a minimum that includes $49 of usage. Sumo Logic’s $0.15 credit price is our reading of a table headed “cents” whose worked example uses dollars. Cloudflare’s $5 is the Workers Paid plan.
What do 5 GB and 500 GB of logs a month cost?
A small app at 5 GB a month fits in most free tiers; a busy one at 500 GB is where the services spread out by a factor of 100. The table assumes 1 KB per log line (so 1 GB is about a million lines), every line kept searchable at the plan’s default retention, light querying, and US or default-region list prices.
| Service and plan | Retention at this price | 5 GB a month ($) | 500 GB a month ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datadog, on demand, all logs indexed | 15 days | 13.25 | 1,325 |
| Datadog, annual commitment | 15 days | 9.00 | 900 |
| Grafana Cloud (Free, then Pro) | 14 days, then 30 | 0 | 224 |
| New Relic (Free, then Standard with 1 user) | 30 days | 0 | 170 |
| Elastic Cloud Serverless, Logs Essentials | 30 days | 1.93 | 193 |
| Sumo Logic Essentials, from example burn rates | 30 days | 19.88 | 1,988 |
| Better Stack, pay as you go (EU region) | 30 days (our assumption) | 0.75 | 75 |
| Axiom (Personal, then Cloud) | 30 days | 0 | 25 |
| PostHog Logs | 14 days | 0 | 102.50 |
| Sentry (Developer, then Team) | 7 days, then 14 | 0 | 273.50 |
| SigNoz Cloud | 15 days | 49 | 150 |
| Managed ClickStack, recommended sizing (Scale, 3 replicas) | 30 days | 654 | 655 |
| Cloudflare Workers Logs (from 1 Dec 2026) | 7 days | 0 | 128 |
| Dash0 | 30 days | 3 | 300 |
| LaunchDarkly Observability | 1 month | 0 | 735 |
| Papertrail (SolarWinds), “starts at” rate | You choose | 25 | 2,500 |
| OpenObserve Cloud, no commitment | 30 days | 3.50 | 350 |
Highlighted: the lowest price in each column. All totals are our arithmetic from the rates in the first table; none is a vendor quote.
What each price includes, and the catch:
- Datadog: $0.10/GB to ingest plus $2.55 per million events indexed for 15 days on demand ($1.70 on an annual plan). You don’t have to index everything: archiving to your own S3 bucket is included in ingest, and indexing 10% of 500 GB on demand costs about $177.50.
- Grafana Cloud: $19 platform fee, $0.40/GB written after the first 50 GB and $0.05/GB processed. We charged processing on all 500 GB; if the first 50 GB of processing is free too, it’s $221.50. Queries are free up to 100 times your written volume.
- New Relic: the free 100 GB covers all telemetry, not just logs. At 500 GB, $160 is data and $10 the first full user; a Core user, who gets the logs UI, is $49.
- Elastic: the advertised “as low as $0.07/GB” applies only above 30,000 GB a month. Logs Essentials has no APM; Observability Complete costs $2.70 and $270.
- Better Stack: no default retention is published for pay as you go, so we priced 30 days: $25 of retention on top of $50 ingest in the EU. The US region is $1.15 and $115, which puts it above PostHog. We didn’t subtract the free 3 GB.
- Axiom: $25 a month includes 1,000 GB of data loading, 100 GB-hours of query compute and 100 GB of compressed storage; past that allowance, query compute costs $0.20 per GB-hour. Personal is capped at 500 GB of data loading a month, one user and three datasets.
- PostHog: 10 GB free, 290 GB at $0.25 and 200 GB at $0.15. Keeping logs longer than 14 days costs $0.05/GB per extra month.
- SigNoz: at 30 days’ retention the 500 GB bill is $200.
- Managed ClickStack: priced on infrastructure, so both workloads cost about the same. Our figure is ClickHouse’s recommended sizing for under 10 TB a month: three Scale compute units (2 vCPU and 8 GiB of RAM each) running all month. One Basic unit would be about $159, but ClickHouse recommends Scale for ClickStack. You also run your own OpenTelemetry Collector.
- Cloudflare: only for logs from Cloudflare products. Billed GB include Cloudflare’s own attributes, and Cloudflare says Workers events average 4.84 KB, so a 1 KB assumption flatters this price. Until 30 November, Workers Logs is billed per event: 20 million included on Workers Paid, then $0.60 per million.
- Dash0 and LaunchDarkly: billed per log record, so the bill depends on line count, not bytes. With 200-byte lines, 500 GB is 2.5 billion records and Dash0’s bill would be $1,500. LaunchDarkly’s self-serve calculator stops at 400 million logs a month, so 500 million may need a quote.
- Papertrail: “Starts at $5.00 per GB per month” on multi-year contracts billed annually; the rate for a given retention isn’t published. On Heroku the add-on is sold in fixed plans instead: free for 10 MB a day, then from $8.99 a month for 65 MB a day.
- Sumo Logic: our estimate uses the $0.15 credit price and Sumo’s example burn rates (25 credits per GB ingested, 0.05 per GB stored per day); your order form sets the real rate. Flex, which bills scans instead of ingest, would be about $785 to $1,178 for 500 GB at Sumo’s lightest search profile, on an annual contract with a new-customer promotion.
List prices as of 25 October 2026, in US dollars, before tax, credits and negotiated discounts. Logs only, with light querying; your line size, query volume and retention move these numbers more than anything else. We haven’t tested these services, aren’t affiliated with any of them, and you should confirm prices with the vendor. To estimate your own bill, multiply your daily log volume by 30 and apply the rates in the first table at the retention you need.
Which hosts can drain logs to which services?
Built-in retention ranges from none (Heroku Fir) or an hour (Vercel Hobby) to 90 days on PaaS hosts; AWS keeps logs until you set a limit. Vercel, Netlify, Render, Northflank, DigitalOcean and Heroku forward logs from the platform itself; Fly.io and Koyeb give you a shipper to run; Railway, Sevalla and Lightsail have no forwarding.
| Host | How logs leave | Destinations the host names | Plan and price | Built-in log retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vercel | Drains: HTTPS JSON or NDJSON (traces over OTLP) | Marketplace log drains for Dash0 and Sentry (billed by Vercel) and Axiom, Better Stack, Datadog, New Relic, SigNoz, Logflare and Sematext (your own account); any HTTPS endpoint | Pro and Enterprise; $0.50 per GB drained | 1 hour (Hobby), 1 day (Pro), 3 days (Enterprise), 30 days with Observability Plus |
| Netlify | Log Drains per site: JSON or NDJSON | Datadog, New Relic, Axiom, Azure Monitor, Sumo Logic, Splunk Observability Cloud, Logflare, Amazon S3, any HTTP endpoint | Enterprise only | Function logs 24 hours (Free) or 7 days (Personal, Pro) |
| Cloudflare Workers | OpenTelemetry export (OTLP JSON), Workers Logpush, Tail Workers | OTLP: Grafana Cloud, Axiom, Sentry, Datadog, New Relic, PostHog, SigNoz, Splunk, Honeycomb, Sematext, Firetiger. Logpush: R2, S3, Datadog, Elastic, New Relic, Splunk, Sumo Logic, BigQuery, HTTP and more | OTLP export: Cloudflare’s docs name no plan; SigNoz’s guide says Workers Paid and beta; Logpush on Workers Paid ($0.05 per million requests after 10 million) | 3 days (Free, rising to 7 on 1 Dec), 7 days (Paid) |
| Render | Log Streams: syslog over TLS, or HTTPS for Datadog and Loggly | Better Stack, Coralogix, Datadog, LaunchDarkly, Loggly, Mezmo, New Relic, Papertrail, SolarWinds, Sumo Logic; any TLS syslog endpoint | All plans, no charge | 7 days (Hobby), 14 (Pro), 30 (Scale, Enterprise) |
| Railway | None: “Railway does not have a log drain setting” | None. Run Vector or Fluent Bit as a service, send from the app, or use the community Locomotive template | Forwarder egress $0.05/GB | 3 days (Free), 7 (Hobby), 30 (Pro), up to 90 (Enterprise) |
| Fly.io | Fly Log Shipper: a Vector app you run, reading Fly’s log stream | Axiom, Better Stack, Datadog, Honeycomb, Loki, New Relic, OpenObserve, Papertrail, SigNoz, S3, HTTP and more | Any plan; you pay for the shipper’s Machine | 7 days searchable (free beta) |
| Koyeb | Log Exporter: a Vector image you deploy as a worker | Elasticsearch, Splunk, webhook; any Vector sink | All plans; you pay for the worker | 7 days (30 on Enterprise) |
| Northflank | Log sinks for the whole team or chosen projects | Datadog, Loki, Papertrail, Mezmo, Better Stack, Honeycomb, Logz.io, New Relic, Axiom, S3, any HTTP endpoint | Pay as you go and Enterprise, not the free Sandbox; logs not billed | 30 days |
| Sevalla | None: download up to 10,000 lines, or pull with the API or CLI | None | — | Up to 60 days in the log viewer |
| DigitalOcean App Platform | Log Forwarding | Managed OpenSearch, OpenSearch, Datadog, Better Stack; Papertrail only in the app spec | Paid tier | Runtime logs live only; build and deploy logs 90 days |
| Heroku | Cedar: Logplex syslog or HTTPS drains and add-ons. Fir: OpenTelemetry telemetry drains | Add-ons: Papertrail, Better Stack, Mezmo, Sumo Logic, Coralogix and others; Fir: any OTLP endpoint | All plans, up to 5 drains per app; no drain fee in Heroku’s docs | Last 1,500 lines (Cedar), none (Fir) |
| AWS Lambda, ECS and Amplify | CloudWatch Logs (Amplify sends SSR logs there too), then subscription filters, Firehose, Lambda’s direct delivery to S3 or Firehose, ECS FireLens | Firehose: Datadog, New Relic, Splunk, Sumo Logic, Elastic, Grafana Cloud, Honeycomb, Coralogix, Dynatrace, Logz.io, any HTTP endpoint | CloudWatch $0.50/GB ingested (5 GB free); Firehose from $0.029/GB | Kept until you set a limit |
| AWS Lightsail containers | None: pull with the GetContainerLog API | None | — | Latest 3 days |
| Google Cloud Run | Cloud Logging, then log sinks | BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub (the route to Datadog or Splunk) | $0.50/GiB after 50 GiB per project; routing free | 30 days |
| Azure Container Apps | Log Analytics or Azure Monitor diagnostic settings; managed OpenTelemetry agent for SDK telemetry | Partners such as Datadog, Elastic and Logz.io; the agent sends to Application Insights, Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic, Elastic or any OTLP endpoint | Log Analytics $2.30/GB (5 GB free), Basic logs $0.50/GB | 31 days (Analytics logs) |
| A VPS (Hetzner, with Coolify or Kamal) | Whatever agent you install | Any: OpenTelemetry Collector, Grafana Alloy, Vector, Fluent Bit, a vendor agent | Your server’s resources | Your disk |
A dash means the host has no forwarding feature to price. Built-in retention is how long the host’s own dashboard keeps logs searchable, from each host’s docs and pricing pages.
Turned around: which hosts name each service in their own docs, and which paths the service documents itself (usually through a generic syslog, HTTPS or OTLP drain).
| Service | Hosts that name it | Hosts the service documents itself |
|---|---|---|
| Datadog | Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare, Render, DigitalOcean, Northflank, Fly.io shipper, AWS Firehose, Google Cloud Run (Pub/Sub), Azure | Heroku |
| New Relic | Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare, Render, Northflank, Fly.io shipper, AWS Firehose, Azure | Heroku |
| Better Stack | Vercel, Render, DigitalOcean, Northflank, Heroku add-on, Fly.io shipper | Cloudflare (Logpush, Tail Workers, OpenTelemetry) |
| Axiom | Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare, Northflank, Fly.io shipper | Render, Heroku |
| Grafana Cloud or Loki | Cloudflare, Northflank, Fly.io shipper, AWS Firehose | Heroku, through Alloy you run |
| Sentry | Vercel, Cloudflare | Heroku |
| PostHog | Cloudflare | AWS (CloudWatch through Firehose) |
| SigNoz | Vercel, Cloudflare, Fly.io shipper | Heroku, Railway (Locomotive) |
| Dash0 | Vercel | Cloudflare, Heroku (Fir) |
| Papertrail | Render, Northflank, Heroku add-on, DigitalOcean app spec, Fly.io shipper | None beyond these |
| Sumo Logic | Netlify, Cloudflare, Render, Heroku add-on, AWS Firehose | Heroku |
| Elastic | Cloudflare, AWS Firehose, Azure, Koyeb (Elasticsearch) | Vercel (technical preview) |
| Splunk | Netlify (Observability Cloud), Cloudflare, AWS Firehose, Google Cloud Run (Pub/Sub), Koyeb | None beyond these |
Datadog and New Relic are reachable natively from the most hosts; among the newer services, Better Stack and Axiom. Any app running an OpenTelemetry SDK can reach most of the rest; Splunk Cloud Platform and Managed ClickStack need a Collector you run.
How do logs get into a log service?
There are three routes: a platform drain (above), an agent or shipper on your servers (the Datadog Agent, Grafana Alloy, Vector, Fluent Bit or the OpenTelemetry Collector), or an OpenTelemetry SDK in your app, which sends structured logs with trace IDs attached.
Datadog, Grafana Cloud, New Relic, Elastic Cloud, Better Stack, Axiom, PostHog, SigNoz, Dash0, OpenObserve and VictoriaLogs all accept OTLP logs directly. Datadog even runs dedicated OTLP endpoints for Vercel, Cloudflare, Heroku and Netlify. Sentry’s OTLP ingest is still an open beta. Splunk Cloud Platform documents no OTLP logs endpoint, only the Collector sending to its HTTP Event Collector. Managed ClickStack leaves ingestion to you: you host the collector. And PostHog takes OTLP plus a Datadog-Agent-compatible endpoint and AWS Firehose deliveries, but no syslog.
Render and Heroku Cedar speak syslog. Better Stack, New Relic, Axiom, Papertrail, Coralogix, Mezmo, Sumo Logic and LaunchDarkly accept TLS syslog directly; Datadog has dropped TCP intake and takes Render’s logs over HTTPS instead.
Which query language and search speed should you expect?
LogQL (Grafana, and PostHog’s compatible API) selects streams by label first, because Loki “does not index the contents of the logs”, only labels, so queries on unlabelled fields scan more. SQL works on SigNoz, ClickStack, PostHog, Better Stack, OpenObserve, Logfire and Cloudflare. Others have their own: Datadog’s search syntax, New Relic’s SQL-like NRQL, Elastic’s ES|QL, Splunk’s SPL and Axiom’s APL.
Speed claims are all vendors’ own (“sub-second” from Better Stack, ClickStack and OpenObserve, “gigabytes of logs in milliseconds” from Dash0), none with a reproducible benchmark. In practice the price model shapes search as much as the engine does: Datadog searches Flex Logs on separate compute (bundled on Flex Starter, quoted above it), Axiom bills query compute separately, and Better Stack sells a “Query boost” at $0.001 per GB scanned.
How long are logs kept, and can you alert on them?
Default retention is mostly 7 to 30 days: 3 days on some free tiers, 30 on Grafana Pro, New Relic, Elastic, Axiom, Dash0 and OpenObserve, and more on Splunk Cloud (90) and Parseable (365). Longer retention is cheapest where storage is billed on its own: Axiom’s storage drops to $0.00522 per GB-month after 90 days without access, Grafana charges $0.10/GB per extra 30 days, PostHog $0.05/GB a month and OpenObserve $0.02/GB per 30 days. Datadog sells 30-day indexing at $3.75 per million events on demand and has Flex Logs for 1 to 15 months (3 to 15 on Flex Starter); longer standard retention is “contact us”.
Alerting on log queries is included everywhere here, with limits. Datadog’s log monitors run only on indexed logs, not Flex. Self-managed Elastic’s free Basic licence runs alert rules but needs a paid licence for email, Slack or webhook notifications. Splunk Free has no alerting. Axiom’s free plan allows three monitors. On Better Stack, phone and SMS on-call needs a $29–34 responder licence.
Which tools link logs to traces and metrics?
Datadog, Grafana Cloud, New Relic, Elastic Observability Complete, Splunk with Observability Cloud, SigNoz, ClickStack and Dash0 all jump from a log line to its trace when the log carries a trace ID. Datadog bills APM separately ($31 per host a month, annual), as does Splunk ($60 per host for App and Infra); New Relic, SigNoz and Dash0 bill traces by volume. Sentry ties every log to its trace and error, PostHog and LaunchDarkly link logs to session replays, and Elastic’s Logs Essentials tier has no APM at all.
Can you self-host your logs?
Yes. Five open-source stacks are credible; the catch is what the free edition leaves out.
| Project | Licence | Query language | Left out of the free edition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grafana Loki | AGPL-3.0 | LogQL | Tenant management, token-based auth and label-based access control (paid Grafana Enterprise Logs, now in long-term support until 1 February 2029) |
| SigNoz | MIT, except the ee/ folder |
Query builder, ClickHouse SQL | SSO and SAML; per-source log retention |
| ClickStack | Apache 2.0 (ClickHouse, Collector), MIT (HyperDX UI) | Lucene-style search, SQL | RBAC and anomaly alerts are Managed-only; the all-in-one image is “not recommended for production” |
| OpenObserve | AGPL-3.0 | SQL | SSO, RBAC and extended retention; the Enterprise edition is free up to 50 GB of logs ingested a day |
| VictoriaLogs | Apache 2.0 | LogsQL | mTLS and automatic TLS certificates |
Elasticsearch and Kibana are available under AGPL-3.0 as well as Elastic’s own licences, and Splunk Enterprise has a free licence capped at 500 MB of logs a day with no alerting or user accounts. PostHog (MIT) and Sentry (Functional Source License, Apache 2.0 after two years) can be self-hosted, but we couldn’t confirm that their self-hosted versions include Logs, and PostHog calls its self-hosted deploy “officially unsupported”. Datadog, New Relic, Better Stack, Axiom, Dash0 and Cloudflare are SaaS only, though Datadog now sells Bring Your Own Cloud log management with no public price.
The log services, one by one
Prices are in the tables above; this is who each one suits, and the catch.
Datadog
The broadest platform, built for indexing selectively: ingest and archive everything cheaply, index what you alert on. On-demand use costs 50% more than committed volume.
Grafana Cloud Logs
Hosted Loki with the best free tier for teams (3 users). Adaptive Logs drops low-value lines before they’re written, and only written data is billed at the higher rate. Pick it if you already use Grafana or Prometheus; queries need labels to be fast.
New Relic
The biggest free tier, 100 GB a month, shared with traces and metrics. Users add up: $99 a month per extra full user on Standard, $349 on Pro billed annually.
Elastic
Serverless prices fall with volume; the headline ingest rate only applies above 30 TB a month (and the headline retention rate above 2,500 TB stored). Elastic Cloud Hosted starts at $99 a month for 120 GB of storage across 2 zones. Best if you already know Elasticsearch and want ES|QL.
Splunk
Sold by quote. Splunk’s Log Observer page now offers Log Observer Connect, which reads logs stored in Splunk Cloud Platform or Splunk Enterprise from Observability Cloud, so the logs themselves live in Splunk’s platform. Realistic only if your company already has Splunk.
Sumo Logic
Credits-based, with unlimited users. Essentials is self-serve; Flex, sold on annual terms and called the default for new customers in Sumo’s docs, charges nothing to ingest and bills per TB scanned, which suits teams that keep a lot and search a little. The free account can’t ingest data once the 30-day trial ends.
Better Stack
Logs, traces, metrics, uptime and on-call in one product, with unlimited team members and the most host integrations among the newer services. The EU region is the default and the cheapest; bundles with 30 days’ retention start at $25 a month billed yearly.
Axiom
The cheapest at volume, because Cloud includes 1 TB of data loading and storage is billed compressed (Axiom claims 95% or more compression). Query compute beyond the allowance is the variable to watch, and the free plan has one user.
PostHog Logs
Generally available since 29 January 2026, next to PostHog’s analytics, session replays and error tracking, with no query or seat fees. It takes OTLP, a Datadog-Agent-compatible endpoint and AWS Firehose, but not syslog.
Sentry Logs
Generally available since 3 September 2025, with every log linked to its trace and errors. Good for application logs; at $0.50/GB, expensive for infrastructure logs.
SigNoz
Open source and OpenTelemetry-native on ClickHouse, with logs and traces at one per-GB rate and metrics per million samples. Eligible startups pay $19 a month for the first year. It documents more PaaS paths than most, including Railway through Locomotive.
ClickStack (formerly HyperDX)
ClickHouse bought HyperDX and built ClickStack from it: ClickHouse, an OpenTelemetry Collector and the HyperDX UI. Managed ClickStack gets cheaper per GB the more you send; at small volumes the always-on compute dominates.
Cloudflare Workers Logs
On by default for new Workers, with volume-based pricing from 1 December 2026, as covered in our 2 October daily. It holds only Cloudflare logs.
Dash0
OpenTelemetry-native and billed per record, with filtered-out data paying only the ingest fee. Startups get 50% off in the first year (90% through partner investors).
LaunchDarkly Observability (formerly Highlight)
Highlight.io joined LaunchDarkly in April 2025 and its domain now redirects there. Logs sit next to session replays, errors and feature flags; the overage rate appears only in LaunchDarkly’s pricing calculator.
Papertrail
Now sold as Log Observability inside SolarWinds Observability. Still the easiest syslog target and still a Heroku add-on, but no longer cheap at volume.
Others worth knowing
- OpenObserve: $0.70/GB on the cloud, open source under AGPL-3.0, with a self-hosted Enterprise edition free up to 50 GB of logs a day.
- Coralogix: prices logs by how you use them, with the data kept in your own S3 bucket. Its pricing page headlines $0.42/GB, while its docs’ unit table works out at $1.125/GB for frequent search down to $0.18/GB for compliance; check which applies to you.
- Pydantic Logfire: 10 million records a month free (a hard cap on Personal), then $2 per million on Team ($49 a month) and up; built by the Pydantic team, with SDKs for Python, TypeScript and Rust.
- Parseable: $0.39/GB ingested with 365 days’ retention, AGPL-3.0 when self-hosted.
- VictoriaMetrics Cloud: managed VictoriaLogs from about $190 to $200 a month for the smallest tier.
Which log management service should you use?
- If your host has no drain (Railway, Sevalla, Lightsail), send from the app over OTLP to any service with an OTLP endpoint.
- If you’re on Vercel Pro, budget $0.50/GB for Drains on top of the log service. Sentry or Dash0 bill through Vercel; Better Stack, Axiom and Datadog need their own accounts.
- If you’re on Netlify below Enterprise, there are no log drains, so ship from your functions with an SDK.
- Under 10 GB a month: a free tier (New Relic, Grafana, Axiom or PostHog) costs nothing.
- Around 500 GB a month on a budget: Axiom first, then Better Stack in the EU or PostHog; SigNoz if you want the option to self-host later.
- Need logs, traces, metrics and APM in one place with support: Grafana Cloud or New Relic for price, Datadog for breadth, if you index selectively.
- Data must stay in your own cloud: SigNoz, ClickStack or OpenObserve, self-hosted.
- Already paying for Splunk or Elastic: keep using it and point OpenTelemetry at it.

FAQ
What is the cheapest log management service?
For small apps, several are free: New Relic includes 100 GB a month, Grafana Cloud 50 GB, Axiom’s Personal plan 500 GB for one user, PostHog 10 GB and Sentry 5 GB. At 500 GB a month, Axiom Cloud is the cheapest published price at about $25 if queries stay inside its allowance, then Better Stack ($75 in its default EU region, $115 in the US) and PostHog ($102.50), at list prices on 25 October 2026.
How much does Datadog log management cost per GB?
Datadog charges $0.10 per GB ingested plus a per-event indexing fee: $2.55 per million log events kept 15 days on demand, or $1.70 on an annual plan. At about a million 1 KB lines per GB, indexing everything costs about $2.65 per GB on demand. Logs you ingest but don’t index cost only the $0.10, and archiving them to your own storage is included.
Does Vercel have log drains on the free plan?
No. Vercel Drains are only on the Pro and Enterprise plans and cost $0.50 per GB, measured as uncompressed JSON. Hobby keeps runtime logs for one hour; Pro keeps one day.
Does Railway support log drains?
No. Railway’s docs say it “does not have a log drain setting”. You can run Vector or Fluent Bit as a service and have your app send to it, emit logs over OpenTelemetry or a vendor SDK, or deploy the community Locomotive template, which reads logs from Railway’s API.
Is Grafana Loki free?
Self-hosted Loki is free and open source under AGPL-3.0. Grafana Cloud’s free tier includes 50 GB of logs a month with 14 days’ retention and 3 users; Pro costs $19 a month plus $0.40 per GB written beyond 50 GB and $0.05 per GB processed.
What is the best alternative to Papertrail?
Better Stack is the closest swap for Papertrail users: it takes syslog, has a Heroku add-on and Render, DigitalOcean and Northflank integrations, and costs $0.10 to $0.15 per GB ingested plus retention. For OpenTelemetry-first setups, Axiom and SigNoz are cheaper at volume.
