- Google open-sourced TorchTPU (Apache 2.0), a native PyTorch backend for TPUs built with Meta, with support in vLLM, SGLang, Hugging Face Transformers v5 and Ray; AWS's TorchNeuron for Trainium, announced a day earlier, also went open source and into beta today.
- llm-d 1.0, the Kubernetes-native inference stack co-founded by Google, Red Hat, IBM and others, adds multi-tenant flow control and session-aware routing for agent traffic across mixed TPU and GPU fleets.
- Cloudflare is backing tsrs, a Rust port of the TypeScript compiler it says is up to 8x faster than TypeScript 7.0 on its own benchmarks; Microsoft's TypeScript 7.1 beta is out too, and faster than 7.0.
- Mistral's Voxtral 3 and ElevenLabs' Eleven Realtime both package a complete voice agent; Voxtral Speech 3 costs $13 per million characters.
- Salesforce agreed to buy Braze for about $5.66 billion in enterprise value, $47.50 a share in cash.
- GitHub's package firewall, in free public preview for npm on Enterprise Cloud, blocks malicious packages before they reach CI runners and coding agents.

## Google makes TPUs a first-class PyTorch device

Google open-sourced [TorchTPU](https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/ai-infrastructure/torchtpu-is-now-open-source-run-native-pytorch-on-tpus/) at PyTorch Conference on 20 October, a native PyTorch backend for TPUs co-developed with Meta's PyTorch team. It runs eager mode for debugging and `torch.compile` for production, and the [code](https://github.com/google-pytorch/torch_tpu) is Apache 2.0. Hugging Face Transformers v5 deploys to TPUs with `device_map="tpu"`, and vLLM, SGLang, TorchTitan, VeRL (in preview) and Ray gain native TPU backends. Google reports up to 52% model FLOPs utilisation training Qwen 3 8B, with near-linear scaling to 8,192 Ironwood TPUs.

Alongside it, [llm-d 1.0](https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/ai-infrastructure/llm-d-1-0-an-open-source-stack-for-distributed-inference/), the CNCF Sandbox project co-founded by Google with Red Hat, IBM and others, adds multi-tenant flow control, router high availability, stable v1 APIs and session-aware routing for agents. One endpoint can sit in front of vLLM and SGLang on both TPUs and GPUs.

### Why it matters

If you have PyTorch training or serving code, TPUs are now a realistic second source next to Nvidia, with the same serving engines you already run.

### Both clouds now speak PyTorch, so the fight moves to price

With AWS's [TorchNeuron](/daily/2026-10-19-cloudflare-clairic-extraction-deepseek-ban/) for Trainium also open-sourced today, Google and AWS both offer their chips as ordinary PyTorch devices. Google hasn't said how much of PyTorch's operator set TorchTPU covers; TorchNeuron skipped about 39,000 of PyTorch's tests in August. Once both work, expect the choice to come down to price per token and capacity.

## Cloudflare backs a Rust TypeScript as Microsoft speeds up the Go one

Cloudflare and VoidZero announced [tsrs](https://blog.cloudflare.com/typescript-rust-port/) on 20 October, a Rust port of the TypeScript compiler [built with AI agents by Max Schwenk of Owner.com](https://building.owner.com/tsrs) and now incubated in the [Oxc](https://github.com/oxc-project) toolchain. Cloudflare says it is up to 8x faster and uses about 70% less memory than TypeScript 7.0 at the same number of type-check workers (Cloudflare's benchmarks). An experimental release is on npm (`npx tsrs`), and there is a WebAssembly build. Cloudflare says it isn't a fork and will follow the TypeScript team's decisions.

Hours later Microsoft shipped [TypeScript 7.1 beta](https://devblogs.microsoft.com/typescript/announcing-typescript-7-1-beta/) (`npm install -D typescript@beta`). On Microsoft's benchmarks (five codebases, four checker threads) it is 1.2x to 1.9x faster than 7.0 and uses up to 50% less memory; Cloudflare's post claims up to 2.5x. It adds typed import attributes and es2026 as a stable target. A release candidate is due in about a month.

### Why it matters

Upgrade to 7.1 for free speed. Try tsrs only on CI checks you can compare against `tsc`: Cloudflare says its output still differs in places, such as diagnostic order.

### Rust's extra pitch is a lean Wasm build

Go's compiler already made TypeScript about 10x faster. Beyond speed, Cloudflare wants a small WebAssembly build for sandboxed agent toolchains on Workers and in the browser. In our view, with Vite and Oxc already in-house, a TypeScript checker extends Cloudflare's hold on the JavaScript toolchain; Microsoft still decides the language.

## Mistral and ElevenLabs sell the whole voice agent

Mistral released [Voxtral 3](https://mistral.ai/news/voxtral-3/) on 20 October: transcription in 50+ languages with speaker labels and end-of-turn detection, expressive speech in 35+ languages, and a voice-agent SDK that chains them with an LLM and your tools. Prices are $0.0035 a minute for Voxtral Mini Transcribe 3 (batch), $0.008 for Mini Transcribe Realtime 3 and $13 per million characters for Voxtral Speech 3. It runs on EU, US and global endpoints or on your own servers.

ElevenLabs launched [Eleven Realtime](https://elevenlabs.io/blog/realtime) the same day, speech-to-speech models (v1 Mini and v1 Max) in 90+ languages behind an API compatible with OpenAI's Realtime API. ElevenLabs says Artificial Analysis found v1 Max scored 98.8% on Big Bench Audio and finished 87.1% of tool-use tasks. ElevenLabs' post gives no price.

### Why it matters

If you already use OpenAI's Realtime API over WebSocket, trying ElevenLabs mostly means changing the endpoint and model name (WebRTC setups must move to WebSocket first). If audio must stay in Europe or on your own servers, Mistral offers both.

### Cheap speech, unpriced conversation

At $13 per million characters, Voxtral Speech 3 is cheaper than Mistral's previous Voxtral TTS ($16) and sits near Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS (about $14, doubling on 1 January) and OpenAI's tts-1 ($15, retiring 6 January), per our [voice AI comparison](/articles/voice-ai-compared/). Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS (about $9) is still cheaper. Neither vendor has published a per-minute agent price, so the agent comparison has to wait.

## Salesforce buys Braze for $5.66 billion

Salesforce [agreed to acquire Braze](https://www.salesforce.com/news/press-releases/2026/10/20/salesforce-signs-definitive-agreement-to-acquire-braze/) on 20 October for about $5.66 billion in enterprise value, paying $47.50 a share in cash. Braze runs real-time, cross-channel messaging (app, web, email, SMS, WhatsApp) for about 2,770 customers, including Canva, Instacart and Venmo. The deal needs Braze shareholder and regulatory approval and is expected to close in Salesforce's fiscal 2028, which starts in February 2027.

### Why it matters

Braze customers should expect a Marketing Cloud and Agentforce roadmap, though Braze's CEO says it will keep building as Braze.

### Salesforce is buying the data stream

It is Salesforce's third deal in a month, after Listen Labs and Loops, and the only one with a disclosed price. Salesforce expects Braze's real-time engagement to complement Data 360, Customer 360 and Agentforce, so agents can act on what a customer is doing now. Our read: Adobe's marketing suite, which competes for the same B2C accounts, faces a stronger rival.
