# Northflank tells every customer to assume their secrets were decrypted

> Northflank tells all customers to rotate every secret after a breach, nine days after Railway. More than half of Cloudflare's probes still accept eMudhra's broken keys, Proton users cancel and call for its CEO to go over its AI push as he drops the staff AI re-interviews, and Google Cloud's spend caps, which cover the Gemini API, are generally available.

- Northflank told every customer to assume their environment variables were decrypted and to rotate all secrets; it later said multiple users had confirmed their AI keys were used.
- It's the second hosting platform in nine days to ask every customer to rotate secrets, after Railway on 21 October, and in both cases AI API keys look like the target.
- Cloudflare says more than half of its probes still accepted certificates under eMudhra's compromised keys more than a week after the disclosure, and JetBrains IDEs trusted them until the latest bugfix updates.
- Proton users are cancelling and calling for CEO Andy Yen to go over a report that he called pentesting "loser thinking"; he cancelled the staff AI re-interviews but said he will keep pushing AI.
- Google Cloud's spend caps are generally available and can stop Gemini API and Vertex AI usage in a project at a budget, with automatic monthly resets and an API.

## Northflank says assume your secrets are gone

Northflank, the London-based deployment platform, told all customers on 30 October to "assume all environment variables have been decrypted" and to disable or rotate every key, according to its [status page](https://status.northflank.com). A Wiz threat alert fired at 11:43 UTC; Northflank deployed network policy patches within about 80 minutes and asked Wiz's incident response team for help. Its latest update, at 15:12 UTC, says "multiple users are confirming that their AI keys have been used". Secret rotation for Postgres and MongoDB add-ons is now enabled for everyone, and customers should turn off public exposure on add-ons. Seven platform components, including networking, builds and services, were listed as a major outage. Northflank hasn't said how the attacker got in.

### Why it matters

If you deploy on Northflank, rotate workload secrets, secret groups and global secrets now, starting with AI provider keys, then check those providers' usage logs for spend you didn't make.

### Platforms are the new place to steal AI keys

[Railway said much the same](/daily/2026-10-21-php2shell-litellm-openai-google-cloud/) on 21 October, calling it part of a series of attacks on platform companies aimed at AI inference providers. A platform holds many customers' keys in one place, which likely makes it a more efficient target than any single app. Northflank sells itself on running workloads in customers' own clouds; our [hosting comparison](/articles/hosting-platforms-compared/) recommends it for that, and we'll revisit it once Northflank publishes a root cause.

## Half of Cloudflare's probes still trust eMudhra's broken keys

Cloudflare says more than half of its probes across large networks still accepted a certificate chain under eMudhra's compromised intermediates, more than a week after the weak keys were disclosed, in a [post on 30 October](https://blog.cloudflare.com/emudhra-patching/). Up-to-date browsers are mostly patched, but bots, old browsers and embedded browsers lag: Android WebView still accepted the chain 30–40% of the time. Since 21 October, Cloudflare logged about 22,000 handshakes using the weak keys, about 160 of them with certificates naming other organisations' domains, which looked like servers' default certificates. It has seen no evidence of interception, but can't rule out targeted attacks. [JetBrains says](https://blog.jetbrains.com/security/2026/10/emudhra-certificate-authority-incident-status-and-guidance-for-jetbrains-products/) its IDEs, Toolbox App, TeamCity and YouTrack are affected; the IDEs trusted the certificates through the bundled JetBrains Runtime, as other Java runtimes did. IDE fixes are in the latest bugfix updates for 2025.2–2026.3 and Toolbox 3.8.2 and 3.9.1.

### Why it matters

Anything with its own trust store, such as Java runtimes, containers, CLIs and embedded webviews, may still trust the keys. Update JetBrains tools and JDKs, and check [the crowdsourced patch list](https://emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com) for the rest.

### Revocation still depends on everyone updating

The browsers moved within days, but the long tail didn't. Cloudflare is backing trust stores, such as the upki project, built to update revocation and Certificate Transparency data quickly. Until bundled stores do that, every CA failure becomes a patch hunt.

## Proton users cancel and call for its CEO to go; he drops the AI re-interviews

Paying Proton users spent 29 and 30 October [posting](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1xjklwp/protons_ceo_cancels_ai_reinterviews/) that they had cancelled or won't renew, asking how to move their mail, and [urging each other](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1xj1sjx/foundationprotonme_tell_them_why_you_wont_be/) to write to the Proton Foundation, which Proton says is its largest voting shareholder, to ask CEO Andy Yen to step down. The trigger was [404 Media's report](https://www.404media.co/manifestos-fear-and-loser-thinking-inside-protons-ai-reckoning/) that Yen called a request for pentesting "loser thinking" while pushing AI-written code. On Reddit, Yen [said](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1xilgwk/manifestos_fear_and_loser_thinking_inside_protons/19ru2qt4r4r5u/) the quote was "taken out of context" and that AI-assisted review is "better, and also faster" than extra days of human review. On Friday he cancelled the staff re-interviews, [404 Media reports](https://www.404media.co/protons-ceo-cancels-ai-re-interviews/) from all-hands audio, admitting "a communication failure on my part" and promising "no loss of jobs from AI", but: "Going forward, I'm still going to push." Proton didn't respond to 404 Media. No encryption flaw is alleged, and nobody has published cancellation numbers.

### Why it matters

Users bought Proton as "the alternative" to Big Tech, as Proton describes itself. If you rely on it, keep exports and use your own domain so you can leave. Our [explainer](/articles/proton-ai-push-report/) sets the anger against Proton's own statements, Proton's response and its defenders' case.

### Walking back the tone, not the strategy

[Defenders](https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/will-the-recent-proton-news-ai-hysteria-toxic-workplace-perception-over-security-affect-recommendations/41842) point to open-source apps and clean audits, and [Privacy Guides](https://www.privacyguides.org/en/email/) still lists Proton Mail while its forum debates it. But Proton has dropped the re-interviews, not the AI push or the security practice critics object to. The next Proton Mail audit is the real test.

## Google Cloud's spend caps reach GA, Gemini API included

Google Cloud made spend caps on budgets [generally available](https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/cost-management/google-cloud-spend-caps-now-generally-available) on 30 October. A cap pauses new usage of one service in one project once estimated costs pass the budget, and [the docs](https://docs.cloud.google.com/billing/docs/how-to/budgets-spend-caps) list four eligible services: the Gemini API, Vertex AI (now Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform), Cloud Run and Cloud Run functions. New at GA: caps lift automatically at the start of the next month, caps can be managed through the Budgets API, and live cost reports show what triggered one. Google says caps on AI services trigger within minutes, but enforcement "isn't instant": in-flight requests finish, overage is billed, and Provisioned Throughput is never halted.

### Why it matters

A leaked Gemini key or a looping agent can be capped per project, and the API lets you put a cap on every new sandbox project automatically.

### A narrow cap, but one that covers model spend

Railway, Vercel Pro and AWS's new projects already offer hard caps for hosting ([our comparison](/articles/hosting-platforms-compared/)). Google's is narrower: one service per project, and it lags, so set it below your real limit.
